Chapter 24

Warner returned to CIA headquarters early Friday morning. Instead of taking the private elevator from the garage to his seventh-floor office suite, he opted for the main entrance. To his right was the white marble Memorial Wall. He paused, his eyes focused on the spot where the 84th star soon would be added. Steve’s star.

Upstairs on seven, Warner found Priscilla, a cup of coffee in hand, her computer already humming. He needed her to get his password for the asset database. For the life of him, he couldn’t keep track of all his IDs, PINs and the like, particularly for those systems he rarely accessed. He wasn’t supposed to share his passwords with anyone, but Priscilla wasn’t just anyone. And the infraction seemed so minor compared to his more recent transgressions.

“Here it is, Warner. By the way, I just got a call from Betty . . .” She trailed off, brow furrowed. Betty was the secretary for the Director of Central Intelligence—the DCI. “The Director needs to see you ASAP. Something major. You’ll probably have to go to the Hill later this morning.”

The Hill, again, he moaned inwardly. “Did they say what it was?”

“No, but Betty said the DCI was swearing up a blue storm.”

He stopped a curse from escaping. “Fine, I’ll go down in five.” If the DCI was in such a state, it’d be wise to give him time to cool down. He went back to his office, password in hand, and sat at the computer.

Others with access to this database were privy to information on assets with whom they had a direct relationship. But as Deputy Director of Operations, Warner had access to everything. He scrolled down the screen through the list of current assets. Nothing. Then he toggled over to inactive recruits.
